Toyota Innova: The Benchmark Filipino Family Transporter

The Toyota Innova is a cornerstone of Philippine family transit. Developed under Toyota’s IMV (Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle) platform—sharing its rugged ladder frame chassis with the Hilux and Fortuner—the Innova has earned a legendary reputation for durability, cargo space, and long-term resale value.

Why it matters

In the Philippines, vehicles often need to pull double duty: daily commuting through flooded streets and transporting extended families to the province on weekends. The Innova excels at both. Unlike modern monocoque crossovers, its truck-based ladder frame handles rough roads and heavy payloads with ease.

Engine Options

The Innova has historically been offered with both gasoline and diesel engines, but the diesel variants are by far the most popular:

  • 2.5L 2KD-FTV (2004–2015): Indestructible, though slightly noisy. It produces around 102 hp.
  • 2.8L 1GD-FTV (2016–Present): The same high-torque motor found in the Fortuner, generating a massive 171 hp and 360 Nm of torque. It is highly fuel-efficient, easily achieving 11–14 km/L in combined driving.

What to look for when buying second-hand

  1. EGR and DPF Clogging (Diesel): On newer 2.8L engines driven strictly in city traffic, the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve can build up carbon. Look for a clean service history showing regular carbon cleaning.
  2. Suspension Bushings: Due to carrying heavy passenger loads over potholes, check the condition of the front lower control arm bushings and rear shock absorbers.
  3. Interior Wear: Check the third-row seat folding mechanism and ensure the dual air conditioning vents are blowing cold air in all rows.
